THE RESTORATION TOUR

THE PROBLEMS

When the 1901 Harrison County Courthouse was completed, government functioned largely at the County level and the justice system was much simpler than it is today. As County government changed and grew, the commissioners approved alterations to the aging building. Some removed original architectural elements and other disguised them. A century of use has taken its toll on the old landmark. Join us on a tour of discovery. Let's start on the outside.

In 1925 and 1927, two of courthouse's original facades were moved out 16 feet, and then in-filled with matching brick.

In 1950 the original second story balconies were enclosed to provide additional office space.

Over the years, spacious offices were partitioned off to create smaller cubicles. and in 1954 one original entry was sealed to house an elevator.

Architects discovered more than two dozen different styles of windows in the present structure. Most workers there had to rely on gas space heaters and window box air conditioners for climate controls.
